Captureedited-6Email allows you to communicate quickly from anywhere, but a cluttered inbox can hamper your productivity. So, how can you make email an effective tool in your work? Bob Pozen, Senior Lecturer at MIT and author of Extreme Productivity: Boost Your Results, Reduce Your Hours, has three tips for managing email effectively. Our favorite? “OHIO” — or, “only handle it once.” Check out his tips in this blog post, and be sure to watch his other videos on leading teams and running effective meetings.
Yesterday, the Institute of Medicine released a new report about the unappreciated toll of diagnostic error. Among the findings: Most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime. The Human Diagnosis Project is working to help prevent such errors by building a global community of medical professionals that together work to diagnose difficult cases. And they’re looking for your help — sign up to start contributing to cases or posting your own to receive help from other professionals at www.humandx.org. If you’re a leader in your community of medical professionals, email Director of Medicine Dr. Shantanu Nundy at contributors@humandx.org to learn how to get others involved.
When Justin Slade began a quality improvement (QI) project as a young medical student, the professionals he worked with worried that he was going to publish their data and make them look bad. But after Slade convinced clinicians that he was working for improvement, he led a project that increased the number of follow-up appointments for patients with sickle cell disease. Last week’s WIHI, a free talk show, showed how students can be an integral part of improvement work, highlighting Slade’s experience as well as the work of Rebekah Bally, who participated in the Open School’s I-CAN initiative. James Moses, Medical Director of QI at Boston Medical Center, shared tips on working with students — including that their enthusiasm brings joy in work. Don’t miss this inspiring conversation — listen to the recording of the program here.

Tuberculosis is one of the deadliest diseases in low-income countries like Togo, where Open School learner Dr. Kossivi Afanvi wanted to improve care as the health director of Lacs District.
