The University of Manchester in England is taking an innovative approach to making care more patient-centered — by involving patients in the training of medical students. In 2015, Dr. Robina Shah helped to create The Doubleday Centre for Patient Experience to directly involve patients and members of the public in medical education. Patients now serve a variety of roles at the university — interviewing prospective medical students, teaching students, and sitting on academic committees governing the medical degree.Learn more in a Q&A with Dr. Shah.
Dr. Mark Greenawald is a senior physician at Carilion Clinic now, but he’s never forgotten a devastating delivery from his medical residency. The odds for his patient weren’t good, but his colleagues blamed him for the outcome — the death of the mother and severe brain damage for the newborn. Now, Dr. Greenawald is trying to tackle the epidemic of clinician burnout that’s threatening health care providers and patients.Read a comprehensive report on burnout in US News, and learn more about IHI’s efforts to improve joy in work.
