The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

We hate to say those three little words. But we can help you go OS_course_video_screenshoteditedback to school this fall, whether you’re a faculty member teaching quality and safety, a Chapter Leader recruiting new members, or a health professions student looking for QI exposure. In fact, we have so much great stuff for you, we decided (in true Open School fashion) that a new online course was the best way to share it. OS 101: Introduction to the IHI Open School: Join the Movement to Improve Health & Health Care is a free course that will immerse you in the Open School’s global community of people who are working to improve health and health care. Start with this short lesson to learn all the ways the Open School is here for you.
A PDSA success: After identifying a baby naming convention that was contributing to errors, Montefiore Medical Center in New York successfully implemented a simple change — and decreased the number of newborns who received the incorrect medicineRead about how the hospital made an impact on patient safety in The New York Times. And learn about how knowledge of human error (such as the tendency to mix up look-alike names) can help to produce safer systems of care in PS 102: Human Factors and Safety.

Are you struggling to reform your school’s curriculum to include more training on QI and patient safety? Dr. Ryan Miller, an Open School Regional Leader and former leader of the IHI Open School Chapter in South Dakota, recently published an article about his Chapter’s work to introduce quality and safety at four South Dakota colleges. Lucky for us, he summarized his lessons learned on our blog. Our favorite of his seven tips: “Just start with something.” Congratulations on publishing your work, Ryan!
