In a new Open School video short, Barbara Balik explains “Always Events,” a concept pioneered by the Picker Institute to capture the experiences that are so important to patients and families that they should always be part of care. After Dr. Dharmaraj Karthikesan ran into an exhausted young doctor who had been humiliated during rounds, he couldn’t stay quiet about the mistreatment he saw in his profession. Karthikesan, an internal medicine specialist in Sabah, Malaysia, wrote a blog postpositingseveral reasons why doctors treat each other so badly: stereotyping by specialty, criticizing others as a means of earning respect, and bullying as a rite of passage. He implores doctors to be kind to one another: “If we work in an environment where we are kind, tolerant, and respectful of each other, we will in turn be more humane to our patients.”
Looking for ideas to improve your next Chapter event? The latest Open School blog post highlights five tips for a successful Chapter event drawn from an event hosted by the Wright State University (WSU) Chapter last fall. The meeting targeted students who were new to the world of quality improvement and wanted to learn more. One of the chapter Chapter Leaders, Brian Patterson, said these introductory events are “vital to the success of the Chapter.” Learn how WSU managed to get students out on a cold December day.
