Sometimes to realize improvement, you have to change how clinicians think. In this video short, IHI Open School Academic Advisor Dr. James Moses tells the story of using quality improvement to provide better pain management for patients with sickle cell disease. Part of changing the clinical practice, he says, was recognizing and addressing provider bias. Learn more about bias and health disparities in our course TA 102: Improving Health Equity.
Last week, hundreds of nursing professors gathered in San Diego, California, for the Annual Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Forum. Stephanie Garry Garfunkel, IHI Open School Managing Editor, was there to share how three nurse educators are using the Open School courses to support their teaching. But we didn’t want the learning to stop there because the featured professors’ ideas are helpful for any health faculty who want to teach the content in our catalog. So we’ve published a blog post with their tips, too. Thanks to QSEN for the invitation!
In sixth grade, Alexa von Tobel ran for class president, even though she was new to the school, and won. Now, at 31 years old, von Tobel is the CEO of a company with more than 150 employees. After dropping out of Harvard Business School to found the company in 2009, von Tobel believes that people should dream bigger. “You have to dream big because no one else can dream for you,” she says. Von Tobel offers more leadership and management advice — including to be honest about your weaknesses — in a Q&A in TheNew York Times.
