Ten Tips on How to Get the Practicum into Your Curriculum

We designed the IHI Open School Quality Improvement Practicum with the hope that students and residents around the world would use the resource to run improvement projects to make patients’ lives better. And faculty, we hoped, would give students and residents the opportunity by integrating the Practicum into their training.

How exactly do you do that? What are the necessary steps?

A group of faculty at the University of Stirling in Scotland, which guided 230 nursing students through improvement projects in 200 different clinical areas last semester, have put together a list of 10 tips to help anyone integrate the Practicum into a training program. The list includes:

3. Use quality improvement methods to create your Quality Improvement Practicum.

7. Keep students at the heart of everything you do.

8. Think of the Practicum as just another assignment.

For the rest of the list, check out the document on our Practicum page.

What We’re Listening to: ‘Saving Lives And Surviving Paperwork Inside The LA County ER’

codeblackIn a recent interview, NPR sat down with emergency medicine physician and filmmaker Ryan McGarry to talk about the emergency department at Los Angeles County General Hospital. Why is this ED so noteworthy? A few reasons: It’s one of America’s busiest EDs. It’s known by many as the birthplace of emergency medicine. And, most recently, it’s become the backdrop of McGarry’s feature-length documentary film, Code Black. Check out the interview here to learn more about Code Black, which premieres this summer, and the story behind it.
