Good employees often get promoted into management roles. But do they have the skills and knowledge they need to effectively lead a team? Whether you manage a small team or are just getting started as the leader of a new project, it’s natural to feel uncomfortable and uncertain about how to take charge. In a new IHI Open School short, Bob Pozen, a senior lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and author of Extreme Productivity: Boost Your Results, Reduce Your Hours, shares six behaviors that can help you become a more effective leader — including tips on using metrics, mid-flight reviews, and mistakes. Check out the new IHI Open School Video Library (pictured below) for more short instructional videos featuring leading experts in health care.

harvard_mededitedLast week, a couple of editors from the IHI Open School left their comfortable Cambridge, Massachusetts, office and headed across the river to Harvard Medical School. They were in for a surprise. “I didn’t expect to be stressed,” writes Editorial Director Michael Briddon. “I didn’t expect my heart to race or my palms to sweat. Or to hear a patient coughing and asking for help.” What did he and his editorial colleague learn from a day in the life of the medical student? Mike shares more on the Open School blog.
tellurideeditedUnable to attend the Telluride Patient Safety Student Summer Camps (TPSSC) this year? You can follow along with daily blog posts from participants. For example, internal medicine resident Dr. Christopher Worsham writes about using storytelling at TPSSC and the power of stories to inspire change. “When it comes to stories of patient safety,” writes Dr. Worsham, “emotion is unavoidable.” Read Dr. Worsham’s post here and learn more about storytelling for change in this IHI Open School video short.
