New Whiteboard Video: Static vs. Dynamic Data

whiteboradLet’s say you’re measuring patient satisfaction scores. In year one, your data tell you the average score is 80 percent. In year two, your data tell you the average score is 80 percent. So nothing changed, right? Not so fast, says Bob Lloyd, IHI’s Director of Process Improvement. “Often times,” Lloyd says, “summary statistics that are static in nature don’t give you the appropriate picture of the variation that lives in your data.”

What’s the difference between static and dynamic displays of data? Let’s dig into the question with Bob and his whiteboard. See if you can correctly answer the question he poses at the five-minute mark of the video.

What We’re Reading: ‘Aiming Higher: Results from a Scorecard on State Health System Performance, 2014’

“Opportunities for improvement abound,” say results from the Commonwealth Fund’s Scorecard on State Health System Performance, 2014, released last week. Co-authored by IHI Senior Scientist David Radley, PhD, MPH, the Scorecard evaluated and ranked every US state according to its performance in five dimensions of care over five years:

  • Access and affordability
  • Prevention and treatment
  • Potentially avoidable hospital use and cost
  • Healthy lives
  • Equity

To learn how your state fared in each of these areas, view the Scorecard here. According to the report, “Even leading states did not perform consistently well — or consistently improve ― across all performance indicators.”
