The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.
Last week, the Open School team returned home from London after attending the 20th Annual International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare. We led a session and asked participants: What made your last educational experience good or bad? We got some excellent answers, and used them to compile a list of teaching do’s and don’ts in our latest blog post.
“Despite near-universal recognition that better care means more collaborative care,” writes Dr. Dhruv Khullar, a resident at Massachusetts General Hospital, “changes to health professional school curricula have been slow coming.” Based on research and his own experiences, Dr. Khullar argues that health education should include more interprofessional training, and that medical schools have a responsibility to provide it. This week and next, in remembrance of Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12, people all over the world are celebrating the work of nurses. Nurses play a critical role in providing and improving care for patients, and we want to share our appreciation for all the nurses who are changing health care as part of the IHI Open School network. Just lately, we heard about the amazing work of Sarah Miano, one of our Regional Leaders, and Don Tyson, who uses Open School courses in his nursing classes. Be sure to thank a nurse this week! (And nurses, check out seven businesses offering freebies and discounts especially for you.)
Join the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses Institute for its 2015 National Forum from May 26–28 in San Diego, California. Participants will learn new strategies to teach quality, safety, patient-centered care, and information technology, as well as strategies to apply research findings in practice. They’ll also hear from the IHI Open School team on how to use our courses as part of their curricula. Learn more here.
