The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

Mariluedited-1Physicians and other health care providers are trained to be knowledgeable, even expert. So how can they learn to seek out others’ knowledge and experience by staying quiet, listening, and asking questions? In a new video short, Dr. Marilu Bintz, Vice President of Gundersen Health System, explains why she believes that listening is the most important skill that leaders can develop. Learn more in our course, L 101: Becoming a Leader in Health Care.
Recently, the Brock University IHI Open School Chapter and its partners won a $41,000 grant to support an innovative elective they created to provide students with hands-on experience doing quality improvement projects with a nearby health system. Needless to say, winning such a large sum for quality improvement education isn’t a situation most Chapters find themselves in, so we reached out to Madelyn Law, the Chapter’s Faculty Advisor, to learn more.
keyboard-2Dr. Henry Marsh, one of Britain’s foremost neurosurgeons, wrote a memoir to catalog his regrets: “As I approach the end of my career, I feel an increasing obligation to bear witness to past mistakes I have made,” he says. According to a recent New Yorker book review, “He writes about his errors because he wants to confess them, and because he’s interested in his inner life and how it’s been changed, over time, by the making of mistakes.” Learn more about Dr. Marsh’s memoir, Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death, and Brain Surgery, in the full review.

Chapter Leaders, listen up! This Monday, June 1, is your last chance to submit the annual Progress Report for your Chapter. The short survey is all we require to maintain your position as an active IHI Open School Chapter. What happens if we don’t hear from you? Your Chapter will lose the opportunity to receive funding next year, and we’ll lose an important opportunity to learn how we can better support you. Help us help you!
GlobeInterested in engaging your Chapter in a community-based project? How about building relationships with other Chapters? Then don’t miss our next call on Thursday, May 28, 12 PM ET, to hear tips on relationship building from West Coast Regional Leader Kelsey Priest and Southwest Regional Leader Jake Reynolds. Connect with other Chapter members and hear about their experiences building Chapter networks and engaging with their local communities.
