The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

You’ve received a job offer that meets your expectations. Now what? Do you accept right away? Seek more money or benefits? In a new IHI Open School video short, Paul Levy, former President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, explores the tricky question of whether to accept a first offer and presents two clear paths for job seekers to consider.
SigaleditedLate discharges aren’t good for anybody, but making them happen earlier is no simple task. On the IHI Open School blog, medical student Sigal Israilov describes her work on a team that improved the discharge process at Mount Sinai Medical Center — with a 73 percent increase in discharges before noon. If you’re interested in leading your own quality improvement initiative, check out the IHI Open School Practicum.
Don_B_white_spaceIn a new JAMA viewpoint, Dr. Don Berwick argues that medical education has sidestepped the march toward external accountability that the rest of the United States health care industry has undertaken — in part due to the “romance of professional self-regulation.” Now, he says, it’s time to consider a different approach: bringing the oversight of medical education under a single governing body. In an era of person-centered, team-based innovative care, Dr. Berwick would have institutions convey the following message to physicians-in-training: “Remember, you are part of a noble enterprise much bigger than yourself, and among the most important questions you can ask yourself every single day is not, ‘What do I do?’ but rather, ‘What am I part of?’”
Community Updates
Each year, we ask each of our Chapters (of which there are now more than 700) to submit a Chapter Progress Report, to help us understand what you’ve accomplished and what the Open School team can do to support you. To understand why the reports matter, check out this blog post about the improvements we made based on your feedback last year. Be sure to have your voice heard, and submit your report this year by June 1.
