In a new JAMA viewpoint, Dr. Don Berwick argues that medical education has sidestepped the march toward external accountability that the rest of the United States health care industry has undertaken — in part due to the “romance of professional self-regulation.” Now, he says, it’s time to consider a different approach: bringing the oversight of medical education under a single governing body. In an era of person-centered, team-based innovative care, Dr. Berwick would have institutions convey the following message to physicians-in-training: “Remember, you are part of a noble enterprise much bigger than yourself, and among the most important questions you can ask yourself every single day is not, ‘What do I do?’ but rather, ‘What am I part of?’”
