Burned into Dr. Atul Gawande’s memory is the patient who should have gotten a CT scan and didn’t. But he can’t remember a single CT scan he ordered unnecessarily. In his latest article in The New Yorker, Dr. Gawande explores overuse in the health care industry and how no-value care is harming patients, both physically and financially. “Millions of people are receiving drugs that aren’t helping them, operations that aren’t going to make them better, and scans and tests that do nothing beneficial for them, and often cause harm,” he writes.
