The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

Joan_ReedeeditedWhy should clinicians care about health equity? Dr. Joan Y. Reede, Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School, has dedicated her career to improving the health of marginalized minority communities. In a new video short, Dr. Reede explains how health equity relates to the role of health care providers, describes how privilege affects discussions of health equity, and offers advice to students and professionals who are interested in working to reduce disparities between populations. Learn more in our newest course, TA 102: Improving Health Equity.
We don’t need to show you the studies that find living in a poor community isn’t great for your health. But this new evidence might surprise you: Not only does health suffer in communities that are generally poor, it suffers when there’s high income inequality. Meaning, it’s not just overall wealth that matters — the distribution of wealth has an impact on health, too. Learn more about the population health study that recently came out of the University of Wisconsin and see where your community lies on a scale of income equity here, in The New York Times.
