7 Rules for Engaging Clinicians in Quality Improvement

donpicOne of the biggest challenges of improving quality within health care is engaging clinicians in the work. Clinicians have demanding schedules, high stress levels, and pressure from payers and accreditors. How can you engage these busy colleagues to join your improvement work? 

Don Goldmann, MD, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer at IHI, answers the question with knowledge from his decades of experience as a clinician and leader of improvement. In fact, Dr. Goldmann shares seven answers, the rules he says are critical if you want to engage the people doing the work in improving it. What We’re Reading: ‘Are Med School Grads Prepared to Practice Medicine?’

What skills should new internal medicine interns have in July, according to the faculty who will train them? A recent survey provides key insight, which, according to a New York Times article, isn’t incredibly surprising ― except that 300 program directors from across the nation largely agreed on the answer. (Hint: Only 5 percent believed that new interns needed to have more medical knowledge or procedural experience.)

Progress Reports Due May 16

Chapters Leaders, complete your Progress Report by May 16 (if you haven’t already done so) to let the Open School know how your Chapter is doing and what support you need. By completing your Progress Report, you’ll gain eligibility to apply for Chapter event sponsorship and maintain your active status in the community. Only one report is required per Chapter.

Calling all students and junior doctors in the United Kingdom and Ireland! Meet with other Chapter Leaders and students in your region at the annual IHI Open School United Kingdom and Ireland Regional Congress, on June 7 in Cardiff, Whales.
