Three Takeaways from 2014 International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare

forumpoicsThe IHI Open School team still can’t get over our excitement from this month’s 2014 International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare. For those who weren’t there to experience the energy and enthusiasm generated by students, junior doctors, and faculty — or for those who want to reminisce — here are three key takeaways:

  1. Student improvers are more visible than ever.
  2. Improvement competencies training is in great demand among health students and professionals.
  3. The generosity of experienced faculty is integral to the engagement of the next generation of health leaders.

What We’re Listening to: Upcoming Webinars and a Podcast

This week, we’re looking forward to learning about resolving tensions within clinical teams, partnering with patients and families to improve care, and the future of medical education. How will we explore all these great topics? With this lineup that includes two upcoming webinars and a podcast (all free!):

  • Transforming Tensions and Tempers on Health Care Teams”: Thursday’s WIHI broadcast will bring together the same group of experts who spoke on managing conflict within health care teams to a packed room at IHI’s National Forum in December. Tune in April 24, 2–3 PM ET to hear them revisit the discussion.
  • Safety is Personal: Partnering with Patients and Families for the Safest Care”: Join members of the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Lucian Leape Institute Roundtable on Consumer Engagement in Patient Safety on April 29, 11 AM–12 PM ET for a discussion of their latest report on engaging patients and families at all levels of care. (Note: Registration is required for this free webinar.)
  • Getting Creative in Med Ed”: Former IHI Open School Regional Leader Lakshman Swamy, host of Radio Rounds, sits down with Dr. Tony Breu, teaching faculty at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center in Boston, to explore creativity in medical education and the evolution of physician training in this free podcast, available for download now.
