The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

Paul_Levy-1What do you say when you get a salary offer you think is low? Is it OK to ask for more money? Author Paul Levy, former President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and his wife, Farzana S. Mohamed, wrote How to Negotiate Your First Job to help answer these types of questions. In a new IHI Open School video short, Levy shares practical guidance on how to best approach a potentially difficult conversation about salary.
It’s common to hear the phrase “quality is everyone’s responsibility.” But what does that really mean, especially on a day-to-day basis? Guests of the next WIHI — including Dr. Steve Spear, co-author of the popular Open School course QCV 101: Achieving Breakthrough Quality, Access, and Affordability — will argue that systems improvement not only should, but can, be a routine part of frontline care. Tune in tomorrow, April 23, from 2–3 PM to hear how frontline providers can address problems as they see them and create replicable solutions in their daily work. Click here to enroll for free.
Bob_WachtereditedRenowned patient safety expert Dr. Robert Wachter is optimistic about technology in medicine. In a Q&A with NPR Shots, Wachter talks about his new book: The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age. “Digitization is an enabler,” Wachter says. “It’s changing the relationship between doctors and their patients from an extraordinarily paternalistic one to one that is more democratic.” Read the Q&A here, and learn more about patient-centered care in our course, PFC 101: Dignity and Respect

Andrea_JonesAndrea Jones, an MD/PhD candidate, is the Open School’s newest Regional Leader — and the first Regional Leader representing Canada! Andrea worked on the team that founded the Open School Chapter at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is researching care for vulnerable populations with mental illness, poverty, and complex conditions. “I hope to make this large country feel a little bit smaller by creating a strong community of change-makers,” she says. Say hello to Andrea at ca.ihi.openschool@gmail.com, and learn more about her and other Regional Leaders on our website.
Last week, Open School Regional Leaders shared tips on how Chapters can integrate IHI Open School courses into their work, events, and school’s curriculum. If you missed the conversation, you can access the Global Chapter Call recording and presentation slides here in the call archives.
