Making a Collective Impact at the 25th Annual National Forum

Last week, more than 300 students and residents and 150 university faculty joined us at the National Forum in Orlando, FL. Following its theme of “making a collective impact,” here’s a look back at some memorable moments from the event:

OS_Congress_256th Annual Chapter Congress: How would you save the health care system in your country $1 billion? Would you start small? Try something drastic? Throw up your hands because it's impossible? That’s the challenge IHI Open School students are taking up, thanks to Drs. Donald Berwick and Jack Cochran, who co-facilitated last week’s 6th Annual IHI Open School Chapter Congress at the IHI National Forum. Berwick and Cochran gave students leadership lessons from their own lives and then urged Open School participants to work in regional teams to tackle the $1 billion cost-cutting challenge. Teams of students wasted no time, starting to think through solutions at the Chapter Congress and continuing throughout the National Forum. Teams were quick to identify common goals and areas in need of improvement — better patient records, better medication reconciliation processes, fewer lawsuits, and more transparency about costs, for starters — and look forward to continuing the work into 2014.

photoStoryboard Presentations: More than 70 student and resident storyboards were presented at the annual Storyboard Reception last week. Review the great work by Chapters, Faculty Advisors, students, and residents from around the world in our virtual storyboard library. Remember, it’s never too early to start getting your storyboard ready for next year’s Forum, scheduled for December 7–10, 2014 in Orlando. A call for abstracts for the 26th Annual National Forum will be available in September 2014.

Keynote Speakers: Videos of Maureen Bisognano’s and Don Berwick’s National Forum keynote addresses are now freely available on IHI TV. All Keynotes and Special Interest Keynotes are also available to anyone who registered for the Forum. Click here to view the keynote videos

Mixing Disciplines and the IHI Open School at Case Western

There’s one rule in associate professor Mary Dolansky’s interdisciplinary course, “The Continual Improvement of Healthcare,” at Case Western University in Cleveland. Just one little thing that all the medical students, nursing students, public health students, nutrition students, business students, and law students need to keep in their minds throughout the semester: No abbreviations!

“There are too many,” Dolansky, PhD, RN, says with a laugh. Without "EMS" (emergency medical service), "NICU" (neonatal intensive care unit), and "JNOV" (judgment notwithstanding verdict), the course has become an engaging educational opportunity for students at the school. Dolanksy shares lessons she’s learned and how she has successfully integrated several disciplines — and the IHI Open School courses — into the course. Learn more in the article on our Website

What We’re Reading: ‘The Amazing Way This Hospital Is Fighting Physician Burnout’

Studies show nearly half of US physicians may suffer from burnout. So what can organizations do to address this significant problem? At the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, for example, emotional troubles or exhaustion not only warrant a procedural response — they constitute a “Code Lavender” alert. To learn more about the creative solutions forward-thinking organizations are using to help prevent and treat clinician burnout, check out “The Amazing Way This Hospital Is Fighting Physician Burnout.”
