The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

IHI Open School courses now qualify toward maintenance of certification for board-certified pediatricians and family medicine physicians, with more specialties to come. The American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Family Medicine have approved a selection of the IHI Open School online courses for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 2 activity points. Learn more here, and please help us spread the word.

Health and health care improvement communities in the United States are focusing on equity and racial disparities in some important new ways. Frustrated by the slow progress of closing gaps (despite decades of research and documentation of the problems), many are forging ahead to create more equitable access to care and better outcomes wherever and whenever they can. Learn what two health systems — Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan — are doing by tuning into WIHI tomorrow at 2 PM ET.

A code blue, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a cliché on those TV dramas about medicine. In reality, the cardiac arrest of a patient triggers one of the most efficient interprofessional moments in the life of a hospital. A housekeeper clears the way of sprinting medical personnel; physicians trust nurses to get the right medicine to the patient; and an internal medicine doctor devises a quick way to establish leadership. In a new radio documentary, Harvard Medical School student Sam Slavin explores the meaning of a traumatic procedure through the experiences of hospital staff.
