The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

This week, Maureen Bisognano announced that she has decided to retire from the position of President and CEO of IHI at the end of 2015, after IHI’s National Forum. Bisognano also announced that the IHI Board of Directors unanimously voted to appoint Derek Feeley, IHI’s Executive Vice President, to succeed her as CEO, effective January 1, 2016. “It has been an extraordinary privilege to lead this amazing organization,” Bisognano said, adding, “I am immeasurably and eternally grateful to the IHI staff, board members, fellows, faculty, customers, and partners – past and present – for all you do to improve the lives of people and communities all over the world. Watching IHI continue to flourish under Derek Feeley’s leadership will be one of the unique joys of the next chapter of my life.”

Student leaders in the IHI Open School community are organizing an international Pledge-A-Thon to mobilize students, faculty, and community members to improve population health. For 30 days, IHI Open School Chapters around the world will compete to secure the most commitments to improve community health. The Chapter with the most pledges will win $250 toward a Chapter event and four free spots to the 27th Annual IHI National Forum (or an additional $100 toward your Chapter event if your Chapter members can't make it to the Forum). Register your Chapter at any time during the competition, which runs from October 15 - November 15.

Ever hear of Bloodbuy? What about the I-Pass Institute, Medalogix, or Twine Health? They’re all finalists in Harvard’s Health Acceleration Challenge, which aims to increase the pace of innovation adoption in health care. The challenge, launched last year by the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Medical School Forum on Health Care Innovation, evaluates innovations by their likelihood of reaching scale. Read about the finalists in a new article in Harvard Business Review, and learn more about what it takes to spread an innovation in our course, QI 104: The Life Cycle of a Quality Improvement Project.
Community Updates

Last week, we told you about the great opportunity to share your work at the IHI National Forum through a storyboard. Act now: The deadline to submit a storyboard for the Forum is October 15 — tomorrow! In case you missed it, storyboard presenters will have an opportunity to share their work with thousands of health care professionals during the conference Storyboard Reception. We will also select four students to present at a workshop session — and offer those four students complimentary registration to attend the Forum!

Mark your calendars for this month's Global Chapter Call on Friday, October 23, at 12 PM ET. Northeast U.S. Regional Leaders Valerie Pracilio and Ross Hilliard will share tips for promoting your quality improvement work both locally and nationally, including at the IHI National Forum this December. You can find the call-in information on the Open School web site.
