Calling all IHI Open School leaders: Visit IHI this summer for our free summer Leadership Academy, taking place from August 25–26 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Over two days, you’ll build your leadership skills and network with others who are passionate about improving health and health care. We’re accepting applications from full-time students, residents, and graduate trainees who are involved in Open School Chapters or I-CAN. We’ll cover lodging and two meals — students only have to pay their way to the event. Apply by Monday, June 20, and we’ll notify you of your status by Monday, June 27. Any questions? Please email openschool@ihi.org.

haskell.jpgLewis Blackman, a healthy 15-year-old boy, died in 2000 after an elective surgery. In this video, his mother, Helen Haskell, offers advice for providers who are involved in adverse events about how they should communicate with patients and families. “You need to continue to be available even if a family rejects your advances,” Haskell says. Hear more of her thoughtful advice in this two-minute video clip.

dental.jpgHow do people in remote Alaskan villages get high-quality dental care? The state has invested in a new type of professional, a kind of physician’s assistant for dentistry, called Dental Health Aid Therapists. In a new op-ed in the Boston Globe, Dr. Don Berwick argues that more states should deploy dental therapists to meet unmet needs for dental care, especially among people living in poverty. “Proper dental care is as much a human right and as smart an investment as is proper medical care,” Dr. Berwick writes. Read more in the op-ed, and learn more about vulnerable populations in TA 102: Improving Health Equity.
