How can health care organizations sustain improvements in safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of patient care? According to the new IHI White Paper, Sustaining Improvement, the key is to focus on the daily work of frontline managers, supported by a high-performance management system that prescribes standard tasks and responsibilities for managers at all levels of the organization. The new white paper includes four tips for getting started with standard work for managers and cases from leading health care organizations.

unpaidpatients.jpgSarah Kliff is the intrepid reporter who has written extensive pieces about the second victims of medical error and about how to prevent medical harm. In her newest piece, she talks about her second job — being a patient. “I write a lot about health care for my job here at Vox, and have spent the past seven years covering and explaining the American health care system,” she says. “But there was something I didn't understand about American health care until this experience. It is the considerable burden our fragmented system puts on patients to coordinate their own care.” Read about Kliff’s experience in Vox, and learn more about how health care is striving to put less of a burden on patients in this WIHI podcast and video short.

Congratulations to the University of Stirling, which has implemented a quality improvement (QI) practicum as part of the curriculum for nurses, building on the IHI Open School Practicum. In a study of the students’ experience, professors found that students worried about the time and difficulty of conducting QI projects, but that they felt a sense of achievement after the work was finished. Interested in including QI projects in your curriculum? Read one professor’s 10 tips for getting started and learn more about the IHI Open School Quality Improvement Practicum.
