You’re just about to accept a new job — you think. You love your future colleagues, the short commute, and the scrumptious tacos in the cafeteria. You’re excited! But then comes the compensation discussion. Should you take a firm stance or just gladly accept the first offer? Paul Levy, former President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, shares his advice in this IHI Open School short. The video is one of several in a series, including last week’s guidance on what to say when a salary offer is lower than expected, which was one of our most popular newsletter items this year.
How can a five-minute visit to the ER and a Band-Aid treatment cost $629? That’s what Malcolm Bird was asking after he and his 1-year-old daughter went to the hospital for a bleeding finger. The hospital that treated Bird’s daughter argued that the hefty $629 fee was not for the Band-Aid itself, but for using the emergency department resources and staff. Since there are no laws or universal protocols for determining these facility fees in America, the bills for common procedures “can vary from as little to $15 to as much as $17,797” between hospitals. Get both sides of the story and discover potential solutions to the expensive problem in Vox.
