baby2-1.jpgJudith Dixon, a home health nurse for the National Health Service in Scotland, conducted a quality improvement project through the IHI Open School Practicum to help parents play with their babies, which promotes brain development. “I realized that the first visit is a time when new parents are often overwhelmed with anxieties,” Dixon says. “How could I expect parents to fully take in the purpose and benefits of play at this first visit?” Learn more about this QI project on our blog, and consider doing your own Practicum project.

Dr. Zubin Damania has a degree from Stanford and runs a successful health clinic, but he doesn’t fit the stereotype of a physician. Also known by his handle “ZDoggMD,” Dr. Damania is trying to change the dry, dull landscape of patient education with music video parodies about health issues. “You’re indoctrinated in medicine to be this persona of unfailing, perfect professionalism,” Dr. Damania says, “but it’s great to see doctors being human and laughing.” Dr. Damania is getting attention, including from some patient groups who don’t find his humor that funny.
