Physicians from more than 20 medical specialties can now earn credit for their certification by taking IHI Open School courses. The American Board of Medical Specialties has added IHI Open School online courses on quality and safety to the directory of learning available for Part II Activity points, including seven courses developed specifically for Graduate Medical Education faculty. Diplomates who take the courses through the ABMS’s directory are eligible for a 10 percent discount on the modest annual subscription fee for professionals. Learn more on the IHI Open School website, and please spread the word with colleagues who may benefit from this resource.

Ravi Patel, a student at Valdosta State University, was on dialysis three times a week for almost three years before receiving the kidney transplant that changed his life. In a new Q&A on the IHI Open School blog, Patel describes how the experience inspired him to study health care administration and join the IHI Open School. “This experience has taught me to be informed as a patient,” Patel says. “After all, it’s not the doctor’s body that will face the repercussions.”

medeoro.jpgIf medical error were a disease, it would be the third-leading cause of death in the US. That’s what researchers found in a recent study from Johns Hopkins Medicine that showed more than 250,000 deaths each year are due to medical errors. The authors of the study are urging the CDC to recognize medical harm as a public health issue that, if addressed properly, could save lives — just like preventing cardiovascular disease and curing cancer. To learn more preventing medical harm, take PS 101: Fundamentals of Patient Safety.
