New Whiteboard Video on Flowcharts

whiteboardA couple months ago, Bob Lloyd, IHI’s Director of Process Improvement, used his trusty whiteboard to introduce us to flowcharts. We learned about block diagrams, top-down flowcharts, and detailed flowcharts.

But what if your process or program is a little more complex? What if the process you’re trying to analyze, document, or manage needs something a little more advanced?

In Part II on flowcharts, Bob, with his signature class ring, introduces us to the supplier-customer flowchart, the “swim lane” flowchart, and the cost-added/value-added flowchart. Take it away, Bob.

Sink or Swim: When Caregivers Are Asked to Float

Before attendees came to IHI’s Patient Safety Executive Development program, they had some homework to do. They were told to ask frontline staff members two questions:

  • Have you ever been unfamiliar with how to care for a patient assigned to you?
  • If so, what did you do?

In her new blog post, the director of the program, Anila Hussaini, RN, MPH, shares some of the dramatically different answers participants reported. She also shares her own answer — from when she was a 22-year-old, newly graduated pediatric nurse — and three suggestions for improving (or avoiding) these types of common, uncomfortable situations.

What We’re Reading: ‘How One Doc Got Rid of Too Many Notes’

By the time the attending physician, residents, consultants, other doctors, and fellows checked on a patient at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, there could be upwards of a half dozen notes added to that patient’s record in just one day. Pediatric critical care physician Brian Jacobs complained often about the amount of “clutter” this created — that is, until he went ahead and cleaned it up. To learn how he helped improve safety and efficiency at his medical center by getting rid of “too many notes,” read Jacob’s interview with Healthcare IT News.

Announcing the 2014 Chapter Progress Reports and April Global Chapter Call

progreportAnnual Chapter Progress Reports give your Chapter the opportunity to let us know how you’ve been doing and what support you need from the IHI Open School team in the coming year. The survey, which will take less than 15 minutes to complete, will provide us with valuable feedback for an entire year: We want to hear from each and every Chapter, even if yours is just getting started. Please take a moment to submit your Progress Report here. Remember, we only need one report per Chapter, so we encourage you to connect with your co-Chapter Leaders to determine your survey responses and who will be responsible for submitting your Chapter’s Progress Report.

After you’ve submitted your Progress Report, join us for the next Global Chapter Call on April 23 at 12 PM or 6 PM EST*, during which you’ll receive feedback from IHI Open School Regional Leaders on your Progress Report responses and gain valuable insight on best practices from other members of the Chapter community. All Chapter Leaders, members, and Faculty Advisors are invited to dial in and participate! Click here to find more information about the Global Call

*Please note that this month we are testing holding two sessions of the global call to allow for more people to participate. You may join whichever session is most convenient to you.
