adverse.jpgEvery health care provider’s worst nightmare is harming a patient through medical error. Tragically, it still happens too often. Lewis Blackman, a healthy 15-year-old boy, died in 2000 after an elective surgery. In a new video, his mother Helen Haskell explains why she believes that communication with patients and families after adverse events is a professional obligation. Everyone encounters problems when they work in a system as complex as a health care organization.  How do you recognize and solve a systems issue? With the science of improvement, of course! You can learn to design better systems through an exercise called the Paper Airplane Factory. Designed by MIT lecturer Steve Spear, this exercise is a fun way to learn in a group, a Chapter, or class. WWR.jpgPhysicians are being asked to do more than ever with no more time to do it, and burnout is on the rise. Are clinicians simply refusing to improve quality and value for patients? Absolutely not, say the authors of a new piece in Health Affairs. “Such characterizations not only implicitly underestimate the increasing stress placed upon practicing physicians,” they write, “but they compound the problem by adding castigation and motivational misattribution to the equation.” Learn more from IHI about joy in work.
Chapter Updates

Please join the IHI Open School in welcoming four new Regional Chapter Leaders in the Southwest US, Northeast US, and the United Kingdom and Ireland. Regional Leaders play an integral role in efforts to support our mission and ever-growing community, fostering connections across Chapters, helping Chapter leaders develop their groups, and leading improvement efforts across the region.
