The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

summit.pngIHI’s 17th Annual Summit on Improving Patient Care in the Office Practice and the Community will take place in Orlando, Florida, on March 20–22, 2016. This event brings together more than 1,000 thought leaders from around the globe in an intimate and dynamic conference to examine new ways to improve care delivery and coordination across the continuum. The Summit offers special opportunities for students, residents, and faculty: Attend on a scholarship, choose from more than 50 workshops including “Catalyzing Students & Residents as Change Agents,” and present your work with a storyboard. (The deadline to submit a storyboard is Monday, February 15.)

A ground-breaking program in England is disrupting the traditional role of paramedics to give first aid and then transport patients to the hospital. Steve Hulks, a veteran EMT, explains it this way: “The problem is most people didn’t need to be in hospital — it was no good for them and no good for the hospital.” The Guardian reports on community paramedics. Health professions students can play a critical role in quality improvement initiatives, both during their training and in their careers. Before the IHI National Forum in December, the IHI Open School selected four student and resident projects from almost 100 submissions to highlight in a special storyboard session. Judges also selected three runners up. Read about the winning storyboards in this blog post.

The IHI Open School Chapter Leader Toolkit is a gold mine of tips to help develop Chapter leadership, recruit members, plan events, fund activities, and sustain your Chapter over time. For 2016, we’ve updated it with more information on our experiential learning opportunities, Chapter leadership structures, Chapter activities, and connecting with Regional Leaders and the larger community. Download the Toolkit and learn more in our course, OS 101: Introduction to the IHI Open School.
