When medical student Nat Fondell first started seeing transgender patients at a specialty clinic, it was like walking on eggshells. “Even the most straightforward appointment felt like doing a delicate dance: I struggled to strike a balance between saying too little…and saying the wrong thing,” Fondell writes in Pulse. But with experience, providers at the specialty primary care clinic for transgender patients have learned that acceptance begets acceptance. It’s a lot harder at other health care organizations that are less familiar with transgender patients, The New York Times reports.
