“We’re hitting the targets, but missing the point,” writes patient safety expert Dr. Robert Wachter in a new opinion piece in The New York Times. He argues that there is a fine line between useful measurement and over-measurement, and that both health care and education have crossed it. “Our businesslike efforts to measure and improve quality are now blocking the altruism, indeed the love, that motivates people to enter the helping professions,” he writes.
