Open School Practicum around the World

PracticumMapWhat do Lagos State University in Nigeria, Trinity College in Dublin, and the University of Puerto Rico have in common? You’ll find one answer by visiting our new Practicum project map. Check it out: Students at each of these universities have successfully used the IHI Open School Practicum to complete a quality improvement project and improve patient care.

While you’re looking at the map, see if you can find:

  • Which continent has the most Practicum project completions?
  • Which university has completed more than 230 Practicum projects?
  • How many Practicum projects have been completed at your institution?

For some of you, the answer to the last question will be zero. That means it’s up to you to get your organization on the map! For help, on the same page, check out our Practicum Resources and FAQs. And, as always, we’ll teach you everything you need to know in our IHI Open School course, QI 201: Guide to the IHI Open School Quality Improvement Practicum.

What We’re Reading: ‘The Physical Exam as Refuge’

The physician author of a recent New York Times opinion piece looks at the evolution of the physical exam: what it used to signify (check out a reminder to get your routine physical from the 1920s!) and the slightly different meaning it’s taken on in today’s technology-driven world. “Once a doctor and patient are at the exam table,” writes the author, “touching, talking without the computer between them, conversation of a different sort is possible.” Read the full article here.

Student Quality Leadership Academy: Inspiring and Leading Change

The Open School welcomes more than 80 students of varying disciplines and levels of experience to Cambridge, MA this week for the 5th Annual Student Quality Leadership Academy. To help prepare students for our upcoming I-CAN (IHI Open School Improvement Change Agent Network) campaign, the focus of the two-day program will be on the public narrative. The public narrative combines a story of self, a story of us, and a story of now to inspire and lead change. Participants of this year’s Leadership Academy will also gain skills in managing conflict, negotiation, and teamwork and communication.

Follow updates from the program on Twitter with #SQLA2014, and check back for our recap and action items in next week’s newsletter. Those of you who are unable to be here can still receive leadership training and get involved in I-CAN ― and we’ll tell you how next week!
