1,000,000 Course Completions … and Five Fun Facts About the Open School Courses

Taking_CoursesWe’ve hit a milestone this year in the IHI Open School. As of last week, students, residents, faculty, and professionals have collectively completed more than 1,000,000 courses in the Open School. We almost can’t believe it ourselves: one million!

To show our gratitude to all those who took the time to learn about improving health care, we gave away an iPad Mini to the lucky winner of our “march to a million” drawing: Crystal Le, a medical student at Tulane University in Louisiana! We selected Crystal’s name from more than 47,000 entries earned by Open School learners between November 20 and December 31.

As we begin our march toward two million course completions, here are five more fun facts and figures about the Open School courses:

  1. The most popular course in our catalog is QI 101: Fundamentals of Improvements. In the last five years, 84,220 people have completed this course.
  2. Students at Western Governors University, an online school based in Salt Lake City, Utah, have completed more courses (52,926) than any other school.
  3. Professionals at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar have completed more courses (36,702) than any other organization.
  4. Since IHI launched the Open School on September 15, 2008, learners have completed an average of 513 courses every day.
  5. In the last month (from December 30 to January 30), learners completed an average of 1,619 courses every day.

IHI.org has a new look!

New_WebsiteThis week you’ll notice some changes to IHI’s website. The new look of IHI.org is the result of listening to your feedback about how to make our site easier to use. We’ve updated the design to improve readability and visual appeal. The home page is cleaner and simpler to get you to the information you want faster. We’ve also organized content into IHI’s five key focus areas: Improvement Capability; Person- and Family-Centered Care; Patient Safety; Quality, Cost, and Value; and Triple Aim for Populations. What We’re Watching: ‘Does Design Thinking Have a Place in Healthcare? An Unexpected Conversation’

IDEOHow could thinking like a designer help us in health care? To answer, we’d first have to know what it means to “think like a designer.” According to Tim Brown, CEO of the global design firm IDEO, “design thinking” looks at three key components of innovation: desirability, feasibility, and viability. In a recent interview with Mayo Clinic’s Thinking Differently Series, he explains how the possibilities to apply design thinking in health care are almost endless. Listen to the conversation here.

Listen to the Recording of Today’s Global Chapter Call

Thank you to the Chapters who joined us for the global call today for making it a huge success! Also, special thanks to Southeast Regional Leaders Ashley Childers and Kimberly Scott and the University of South Carolina’s Chapter members for leading today’s discussion, which highlighted sustainability and succession planning. As we learned today, four things to keep in mind to maintain momentum are:

  1. Create a sustainable leadership model that will carry over year to year without “reinventing the wheel.”
  2. Recruit members from all class levels.
  3. Keep records of processes, timelines, contacts, materials, budgets, and lessons learned from events.
  4. Update the IHI Open School team on your leadership team changes.

For those of you who were not able to attend, please take a moment to catch up on what you missed by listening to the recording of the call. Stay tuned for more information from the IHI Open School team on the next global Chapter call, scheduled for May.
