Midwife Aims to Deliver Quality Improvement Skills to Colleagues

Diana Jolles, CNM, MS, has delivered excellent care to thousands of new mothers during her career. She’s assisted mothers to deliver adorable baby girls and boys in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. Now, she’s aiming to deliver quality improvement skills to the midwife community in the United States.

Jolles, the Quality Section Chair of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and a professor at Frontier Nursing University in Kentucky, is creating a virtual community for students, faculty, and practicing midwives. All midwives, Jolles says, are welcome to join the group, which will learn from the IHI Open School courses throughout 2014. Learn more on the IHI Open School website.

What We’re Reading: ‘Speaking Up about the Dangers of the Hidden Curriculum’

No matter the strength of our knowledge or good intentions, speaking up can be difficult. In a new Health Affairs article, Open School Regional Leader Alumnus Joshua Liao poignantly speaks to this: “I served in national leadership roles for several patient safety organizations,” he writes. “None of those experiences, however, prepared me for Andrea’s case.”

To learn what happened when Liao, as a medical student, found himself under intense pressure to perform an unfamiliar procedure, read the full article.
