Creating an Elective at Baylor: Four Steps to Success

BCMHere at the IHI Open School, we like to highlight innovative work from our Chapter network, which is why we jumped at the opportunity to learn more about how the IHI Open School Chapter at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, has made strides in integrating quality improvement (QI) and patient safety (PS) into its school’s curriculum. In 2010, Chapter members helped launch a required safety course for medical students; ever since, they have remained involved in that course’s success, in particular by routinely collecting and implementing student feedback to continually improve the course. Last October, the Chapter decided it was time to create a second, elective course that would include the entire IHI Open School catalog and provide hands-on experience in PS and QI. How did the Chapter Leaders at Baylor make it happen? Read about their four steps to success here.

What We’re Reading: Pulse—voices from the heart of medicine

Every Friday, Pulse—voices from the heart of medicine shares creative work in many forms — from photographs to haikus — from doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, students, patients, and anyone else who wants to share their experiences of giving or receiving health care. Last week’s publication included the poem “Luca” by Dr. Richard Weiss and “Checking Boxes,” an essay by Dr. Regina Harrell; we invite you to check out both pieces here.

Pulse is accepting poetry submissions for 2014. Click here to submit your original poem related to illness, healing, and/or health care before the November 30, 2013, deadline.
