New Video: How can you become a leader in health care?

michaelpughTrying to understand the difference between management and leadership. Being the newest member of the team and the boss at the same time. Hoping your staff believes you know what you’re doing.

Becoming a leader isn’t easy. And becoming a leader in health care is even harder.

Michael Pugh, President, MdP Associates, LLC, knows those two truths well. He was the interim CEO of a hospital at the age of 26, thrust into a new position without knowledge, experience, or a big resume. Now, three decades and several CEO jobs and board positions later, he’s learned a lot about leadership in health care. And in this animated, four-minute video, he shares what he believes are the keys to success for a young leader.

Pugh was also a co-author of IHI’s newest white paper, High-Impact Leadership: Improve Care, Improve the Health of Populations, and Reduce Costs. Since we released it last December, more than 8,000 professionals, faculty members, and students have accessed the content. In a new five-minute video, Pugh explains why all leaders (current and future) should read the paper, discusses why he and his colleagues wanted to write it, and shares a two-minute synopsis of the paper’s three sections.

What We're Watching: ISQua and IHI Debate

logos“By 2030, residential care for the aged will be unaffordable, and the absence of alternatives will lead to a crisis in quality care for the aged.”

Do you agree with this statement?

IHI and The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) recently staged a friendly debate, and put this same question to four international health care leaders. Hear the thought-provoking arguments — including one from IHI’s Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, Don Goldman — and vote for the winning team here by June 14.
