Leading Improvement in Population Health

home_Feeley_LeadingImprovementPopHealthMay14

In a new article in Healthcare Executive, Derek Feeley, IHI’s Executive Vice President, reflects on what it means to be a population health–focused leader. While he draws on his experience leading the National Health Service in Scotland, his advice is for health improvers at any stage of their careers — which may or may not be in health care. (“A front-line worker in improving health is just as likely to work in a kindergarten classroom as in a clinic,” he says.)

How can we mobilize resources outside of the health care system to promote good health? At the individual level, there’s volunteering, time banking, or the person willing to organize a playgroup or walking club. At the community level, assets include safe streets, bike paths, public gardens, and spaces to convene.

What We’re Reading: ‘National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014’

DiabetesLooking for one more reason to think about population health this week? According to newly released CDC findings, nearly 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, which is almost 10 percent of the total population. Although diabetes is not always preventable, studies show lifestyle interventions can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, and keys to managing all types of diabetes include healthful eating, physical activity, and patient education. To learn more, including the estimated direct and indirect medical costs associated with diabetes in the U.S., read the full report here

Get Involved in the IHI Open School Improvement Change Agent Network (I-CAN)

The health needs of our communities are rapidly evolving, and our education systems are falling behind. What can you do? Get involved in the IHI Open School Improvement Change Agent Network (I-CAN), a new campaign dedicated to improving population health through project-based leadership training.

I-CAN‘s mission is to train health professions students to become community organizers and leaders of population health improvement.

To kick off the campaign, we’re in the midst of a three-part webinar series, and it’s not too late to join the final installment on Thursday, June 19 at 2:00 PM EST. (If you missed the previous webinars, recordings are available here: webinar 1 recording; webinar 2 recording.) The webinars have been a great opportunity to build energy and brainstorm with students, faculty, and clinicians throughout the global IHI network.

If we combine I-CAN’s training and support with your leadership in the field, we can lead the transformation of the care delivery system to improve care globally. Follow this link on June 19 to join the next webinar. For more information, email us at openschool@ihi.org.
