The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.

maureen_and_derekeditedIHI CEO Maureen Bisognano and Executive Vice President Derek Feeley took the stage at IHI’s 26th Annual National Forum to deliver their keynote address together. They were making a point — to achieve the next level of improvement, leaders can’t be trapped by the tyranny of the “or.” In fact, problems in health care are interconnected. To thrive today, health systems need improvers who can think in terms of “both/and,” rather than “either/or”: quality and safety, joy for patients and joy for staff, health and health care. Watch their speech here.

Dr. Leana Wen became Baltimore’s health commissioner this month, a move away from her career as an emergency medicine doctor. Why? Because she’s seen social factors such as low socioeconomic status and gun violence undermine her efforts to help patients. “Policy decisions that affect everyday life are the ones that can do the most for people’s health,” she writes in NPR’s Shots blog. Read her story here, and lead your own population health project in our new course, Leadership and Organizing for Population Health. Applications to take the course are due on January 30.

Community Updates

Sarah Miano, RN, tells the story of how she got into health care and quality improvement in a new series on our blog, “Meet a Regional Leader.” An alumnae of the IHI Open School Chapter at Case Western Reserve University, Sarah now volunteers as a Regional Leader for the Midwest. “Quality improvement is more than a catchphrase for me,” she says. “It ties back into why I went into health care — to make a difference in people’s lives.” Find out a little-known fact about Sarah (and much more) in our Q&A, and reach out to your Regional Leader to see how she or he can help you.

GlobeTomorrow at 12 PM ET the IHI Open School will hold its quarterly Global Chapter Call. Join our Regional Leaders as they discuss transition planning and tips for maintaining a strong Chapter from year to year.

The Telluride Patient Safety Student Summer Camps offer health science students and residents a five-day exploration of patient safety issues and risk reduction strategies to improve patient care. Applications are now due on February 15.
