We’re Back! Five Takeaways from the 26th National Forum

26forumstoryboardsIt’s hard to summarize the excitement and learning of the 26th National Forum in Orlando, Florida. The IHI Open School team is back this week with sore feet and new energy for improving health for all people. In case you missed the Forum, check out our blog post for a recap. And don’t miss Dr. Don Berwick’s invitation to be part of IHI Open School history by joining the Improvement Change Agent Network (I-CAN) our new initiative to improve population health. In the next phase of I-CAN, we’re re-running our eight-week, semi-synchronous online course, “Leadership and Organizing to Improve Population Health,” beginning February 19, to help you learn leadership and community organizing skills to take action in your community. Learn more and apply here.

Resource of the Month: A Case Study on Improving Community Care

Imagine you’re a provider at a community health center in the midst of a bustling, culturally diverse city. Your patients often come into the health center with complex medical and social needs. In addition to that, patients are frustrated by long wait times for care and often don’t show up to their appointments. Are your patients at fault for being “non-compliant,” or do the providers share responsibility for these problems? Read more about this case and discuss with your Chapter.

Quality Improvement: A Little Secret We’d Like to Share

Whiteboard-1In case you missed it, Dr. Mike Evans has a new illustrated video out — about the quality movement in health care. IHI collaborated with the Canadian family physician, famed for his dynamic whiteboard videos on a wide range of health topics, to help spread the word that improvement science can save lives. Mike Briddon, Senior Managing Editor for the Open School, writes about the video in a new blog post. Help us share the secret of quality improvement by using the video in your Chapter and sharing it with your colleagues.

What We’re Reading: Unprecedented Progress in Patient Safety

At IHI, we believe in celebration. So that’s what we did when we read that health systems averted 50,000 deaths and saved $12 billion by reducing harm to patients between 2010 and 2013. CNBC reports that health systems have improved quality and safety by reducing pressure ulcers, hospital readmissions, and hospital-acquired infections. To the staff who made this possible, we offer our thanks and congratulations. If you’d like to learn more about patient safety and medical harm, take the Open School course PS 100: Introduction to Patient Safety.
