Move over, Movember. This November we're celebrating Whiteboard Month, starting with our newest whiteboard video, "Family of Measures." What is this family? How can it help us improve? Bob Lloyd, Director of Performance Improvement at IHI, explains how to develop a group of outcome, process, and balancing measures to help you understand the variation in a system and the impact of your changes. Tomorrow on WIHI, IHI’s bi-weekly audio program, experts discuss new risks for patient safety arising from health systems adopting electronic health records. While these systems hold great potential for improving care, some features may be having the opposite effect. Tune in tomorrow at 2 PM ET to learn about glitches and fixes in electronic health records.
Dr. Suzanne Koven recalls the panic surrounding the advent of AIDS in the 1980s that stigmatized the sick and denied them care. With the cause of AIDS still unknown, providers made “lame, nervous jokes” to distance themselves from the groups they deemed at risk. Today, Koven sees a familiar pattern in the unfair accusations against nurses in Dallas who treated Ebola. “Despite progress we’ve made in managing epidemics,” writes Koven, an internist at Massachusetts General Hospital, in the Boston Globe, “clinicians still need to be reminded to resist the self-protective reflex of demonizing the ‘other’ when a new outbreak occurs.”
