New Activity: Stories from the US Health Care SystemEscape_Fire

The award-winning documentary Escape Fire: A Fight to Rescue American Healthcare tells the story of two patients struggling to navigate the fee-for-service system. Bringing Joy and Celebration to Work by Finding the Bright Spots

Writing_NLPatient safety often focuses on errors, with an aim to improve. But much can be learned from positive deviance, as a new article in BMJ Quality and Safety describes. At IHI, celebration and joy in work have been hallmarks of the improvement approach. After all, a beleaguered health care workforce sometimes needs motivation to keep trying. Joelle Baehrend, Fellowship Director at IHI and the Content Manager for IHI’s Patient Safety Focus Area, responds to the BMJ article in a new blog post.

What We’re Reading: End-of-Life Care for the Majority

Diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, Brittany Maynard has sparked a national debate with her announcement that she moved to Oregon to have access to doctor-assisted suicide. But this kind of death is extremely rare in the US. Meanwhile, 90 percent of Americans agree it’s important to have conversations about the end of their lives, but only 30 percent have done so, according to The Conversation Project. In a Washington Post op-ed, Ellen Goodman, co-founder of The Conversation Project, urges Americans to talk to their families and doctors about the death they are likely to face, rather than Maynard’s exceptional circumstances. Providers who need basic skills for these conversations can learn them in PFC 103: Having the Conversation.

Calling All Chapters: Join Tomorrow’s Global Chapter Call at 12 PM ET

GlobeWhat makes a Chapter succeed? On Thursday, October 30 at 12 PM ET, our Southeast Regional Leaders, Kimberly Scott and Ashley Kay Childers, will dive into this discussion on the next Global Chapter Call. With insights from Chapter Leaders from Duke University and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the Regional Leaders will offer tips for leadership and meeting structures to help with recruitment, maintaining momentum, and continuing the Chapter’s work from year to year.

Global Chapter calls, hosted every quarter, offer an opportunity for new and seasoned Chapter Leaders, members, and Faculty Advisors to connect and discuss challenges and opportunities in the network. The calls are also a great opportunity to highlight the hard work you’ve been doing locally with a global network of leaders and innovators.

Please find the connection information below and on the Open School website. Click here to add the call to your calendar.
