Aspiring Writers, We've Got a New and Improved Resource for You
Writing can be hard, and getting published can be even harder. That’s why we recently updated our list of journals where you can submit your writing. To make the list easier to navigate, we’ve organized the publications into three categories: journals that publish student work; second-tier journals, including many that focus on quality improvement; and top-tier journals. You might not be accepted to publish in BMJ just yet, but it never hurts to start reading and dreaming. Know any publications we should add? Shoot us an email to let us know!

Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, spent three years researching his latest book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. As a surgeon, he was frustrated by his own inability to help patients navigate the end of life. By interviewing hundreds of people with experiences of dying or caring for the dying, he found two truths: first, medicine has failed to acknowledge people’s goals beyond prolonging life, and, second, the best way to identify those priorities is to ask. In an essay adapted from his book and published in The New York Times, he tells the story of how his daughter’s dying piano teacher was able to have “the best possible day.” Read the excerpt and join us at IHI’s 26th National Forum this December in Orlando, FL, to hear from Gawande, a bestselling author and staff writer for The New Yorker.
