Mistrust of health care systems is one of the causes of health care inequities in the United States. In a new video short, Rev. Bobby Baker, who works with underserved patients in Memphis, Tennessee, explains what drives this mistrust. “If whenever I show up, there’s always a barrier that I can’t get around, then it feels as if the system does not want me to be a part of it,” Rev. Last week, STAT Newspublished an investigation detailing the sales tactics that pharmaceutical company representatives used to persuade doctors to prescribe OxyContin, a drug that is blamed for contributing to the opioid epidemic. Documents show “sales reps were instructed to downplay the threat of addiction with OxyContin and make other claims to doctors that had no scientific basis,” the article says. The documents came from a lawsuit brought by the state of West Virginia against the manufacturer for inappropriately marketing the drug.
