The National Forum Is Only Five Days Away!

Forum_StoryboardWe’re busy packing our bags for Orlando and can’t wait to see all the attendees at IHI’s 25th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care in less than one week! There will be a brief hiatus in our newsletter while we fill our role as Blue Shirts at the conference, and we’ll return with a new issue on December 18.

Are you attending the Forum? Visit the Student Lounge during the conference in the Tampa room at the Marriott World Center, and don’t forget to check out Workshop A9/B9 “Getting By with a Little Help from … Students?” — which features the Open School. Be sure to share your experiences with us by sending photos, videos, or reflections to openschool@IHI.org.

Can't make it this year? Take a virtual tour of the student storyboards on our Website, and follow Forum events on Twitter with the #IHI25Forum hashtag.

What We’re Reading: Two Articles and a New Book from IHI Faculty

With the 25th National Forum less than a week away, we’re gearing up with new reading from IHI faculty, which reminds us of who we are, why we’re here, and the important work to be done.

First, two articles discuss ongoing efforts to achieve IHI’s “Triple Aim” in different parts of the world: In “Constraints on Health Care Budgets Can Drive Quality,” IHI executive vice president Derek Feeley shares lessons from his former work as head of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland, and in “The Big Barrier to High-Value Health Care: Destructive Self-Interest,” IHI executive director Lindsay A. Martin and senior Promising_to_Carefellows Dr. Donald Berwick and Thomas Nolan examine challenges of getting key stakeholders to cooperate in the Mid-Atlantic US health system.

Last but not least, Berwick’s new book, Promising Care: How We Can Rescue Health Care by Improving It, gathers 16 of his speeches given over 10 years, beginning with “My Right Knee,” his keynote speech from the 2003 National Forum. Pick it up for your trip to Orlando (or at the conference, for the trip home), and see you there!

Chapter Events Around the World

Japan_OSOn November 24 in Japan: Chapter Leader Hideki Endo introduced the IHI Open School Chapter of the Japanese Society for Quality and Safety (JSQSH) to students and young doctors at the 8th Annual Congress of JSQSH. Congratulations on a successful workshop, and we look forward to seeing how your Chapter grows!

Recently in Poudre Valley, CO: The Open School Chapter at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus took a field trip north and visted Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR), where they met with the President of the University of Colorado Health Center for Performance Excellence, Priscilla Nuwash, and health system leaders in quality improvement (QI) and risk management. Chapter members learned about MCR’s IHI_OS_helicopternationally recognized quality journey firsthand and engaged in discussions that brought health care improvement to life. Their tour of the state-of-the-art medical center served as an inspiring look at patient-centeredness and QI theory put into practice, and students were excited to bring their fresh perspective on QI back to their classrooms and careers. The picture to the left shows the University of Colorado’s Chapter members and Open School Faculty Advisor Wendy Madigosky on the helicopter stop of their tour.
