The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.
Are you looking to integrate quality improvement into your daily work?
Our new three-lesson course covers the transition from learning about quality improvement (QI) to practicing it every day, outlining both challenges and solutions. You will hear from students, frontline health professionals, and board members about their high (and sometimes skewed) expectations of using QI in the workplace. You’ll learn how — and why — some of them failed and how they coped with the harsh realities they faced. Then, you’ll learn strategies they used to finally make positive changes within their systems and for their patients — and how to do the same thing on your health care journey.
Former IHI Fellows, Holly Oh, MD, and Chris Grant, MBBS, FRCA, are the authors of the new 60-minute course that consists largely of video interviews with fellows and Open School students talking about personal struggles they’ve experienced — and the triumphs they’ve enjoyed — trying to make improvement a reality. Together with Dr. Don Berwick, President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at IHI and Former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the IHI Open School has designed an activity to help Chapters contribute to the improvement of patient care by reflecting upon the experience of the Mid Staffordshire National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust Public Inquiry. A report based on the inquiry, which was developed by Dr. Berwick and a team of health care experts and released over the summer, is filled with recommendations to improve systems, safety, and culture in the NHS in England; however, it does not include recommendations for students or educators.
Through a group discussion within your Chapter and an online webinar with Dr. Berwick, our new activity gives you the opportunity to determine how you — as students, junior doctors, and new professionals — can change yourselves, your schools, and your health systems to improve care. Over the past couple of decades, the traditional pre-med student that medical school admission committees used to seek has begun to change, according to a new article from Forbes. Instead, some experts say that aptitude in “right-brained” activities — related to imagery, visual, and drawing skills — may be equally or more important to success in today’s digital, image-based world of health care. As the article goes on to explain, this isn’t really a new way of thinking about medicine; it’s actually more of a return to the old.
Register and attend the National Workshop on Quality for Medical Education on November 9 in Baltimore, Maryland hosted by the American College of Medical Quality and the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. The workshop serves as an opportunity for medical students, residents, and fellows to learn how to integrate patient safety and quality improvement into their careers and to hear from national experts about important technical and leadership skills. Speakers include Peter Pronovost, Elizabeth Mort, David Mayer, John Bulger, and others.
IHI’s 25th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care, which will be held on December 8–11 in Orlando, Florida, is the premier meeting place for people committed to the mission of providing safe, effective patient care at a reasonable cost.
