When you think of a leader, what comes to mind? A title, such as “CEO”? Or a behavior, such as taking responsibility? Whatever your role in your organization or school, you can learn how to lead in the updated Open School course, L 101: Introduction to Health Care Leadership. You’ll learn essential leadership behaviors, how to influence people with different personality types, and hear stories from real-world health care leaders about how they effected change in their health care systems. Dr. Elisabeth Poorman thought she was the only resident feeling hopeless and sad all the time. Then she heard friends’ confessions, and read that depression rates jump by as much as 30 percent in the intern year. But there are many solutions most residency programs aren’t offering — safe spaces for residents to talk about losses, offering mental health liaisons who are fire-walled from the residency program, and training residents to recognize mental health problems in one another. Students from across the health professions have roles to play in confronting the opioid epidemic. This fall, a cohort of learners will collaborate to develop solutions to the opioid crisis through the Leadership and Organizing to Improve Population Health course.
