Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is now treating such episodes, which violate patients’ right to be treated with dignity and respect, with the same formality as incidents of physical harm. “As our approach to harm evolved, we gradually realized that we were focusing solely on physical harms and did not have a systematic approach to emotional harms to patients,” the BIDMC authors explain.
