More than 8,000 medical school graduates didn’t match with a residency program this spring. Unable to practice medicine, they have pursued other options: waiting another year to reapply, pursuing further training in nursing, or choosing another career. Some say it’s a good thing that not all medical school graduates get matched to residency programs, because it ensures that only those meeting high standards can become doctors. Others say it’s a waste of training in a country with a shortage of primary care physicians. Read more about what these graduates are doing and the controversy over the number of residency slots in Stat News.
