Untitled2-1.jpgDr. Donald Berwick, IHI President Emeritus and former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, delivered three of his most memorable IHI National Forum keynote addresses in 2009, 2011, and 2012. In his speeches “Squirrel,” “The Moral Test,” and “And We Said, ‘No,’” Dr. Berwick talks about successes in health care quality improvement and the challenges that still lie ahead. We’ve published these speeches for the first time on www.ihi.org, just ahead of this year’s IHI National Forum.

Whether you are new to quality improvement or just need a refresher, the IHI Quick Course: Back to Basics: Building Essential QI Skills will move you ahead in your QI journey. Participants of this one-day, in-person training — offered in several US cities — will study the key elements of the Model for Improvement, develop high-leverage change ideas using driver diagrams, and create Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. Find details at ihi.org/QuickCourses.
Decades ago, if you wanted to be a leader in health care, you went to med school. Now, the path is much less clear. With huge changes in the industry, a high school senior wonders if she should pursue studies in technology, genetic medicine, policy, or entrepreneurship. After all, doctors aren’t trained extensively in any of these disciplines. Read more and offer the author your advice on her career path in Stat News. To hone your skills, take our course L 101: Introduction to Health Care Leadership.

Untitled-6.jpgIn early 2016, two faculty and 10 students at the University of British Columbia School of nursing participated in the IHI Open School course Leadership and Organizing for Population Health, an eight-week course to engage health students in their community. Students found opportunities at existing foot soak clinics to make more meaningful connections with patients, including connecting patients with primary care providers, to avoid health care exacerbations and unnecessary visits to the emergency room. The team was recently named runner-up for the Quality Culture Trailblazer award from the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council. Congratulations to the team!
