Opioid deaths continue to rise in the United States. Harrington HealthCare System in rural Massachusetts has taken an unusually thorough approach to responding to the opioid crisis in its community. “Harrington decided on this approach after witnessing first-hand that our community was continuously losing members from opioid overdose,” said Tracey Weeden, Patient Assessment Services Coordinator. “We soon realized that the traditional culture of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ wasn’t working for this population.”IHI interviewed three leaders at Harrington to learn more about what they’ve done.
Harvard researchers have found that elderly hospitalized patients who are cared for by female doctors fare better than those treated by men. They have fewer hospital readmissions and fewer deaths, according to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. But why?
