As loyal newsletter subscribers, we’re telling you first: The IHI Open School just released its first Teacher’s Edition of the online courses you know and love. The Teacher’s Edition is packed with lesson plans, lecture slides, homework assignments, classroom exercises, and exams to reinforce core quality and safety concepts from the Open School courses. The complete package is part of an Open School group subscription (group administrators can find the materials on their Dashboard). We’ve also made many teaching materials freely available to everyone. Check out the free preview here.

The Washington Post reports a new trend may affect how physicians learn: Medical schools are increasingly replacing classroom lectures with more active forms of learning. Rather than assign homework after class, some medical educators, such as all faculty at the University of Vermont, are asking students to complete didactic learning beforehand. When students prepare with pre-work, they can use class time for group learning and problem-solving. Here’s an example of how to use the Open School online courses in a “flipped classroom” approach. (Look above for more new materials from the Open School Teacher’s Edition.)
