The IHI Open School is an innovative learning community where you can take free online courses, earn certificates, network with peers and experts, and gain confidence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety to change health care.
At IHI, we’re often asked about the relationship between the IHI methods of quality improvement and Lean, developed from the Toyota Production System. Can they be used together? Is one better than the other? A new IHI white paper, authored by Improvement Advisors Richard Scoville and Kevin Little, has answers to these questions. The authors argue that Lean and IHI’s methods are complementary, so there’s no need to choose one over the other as a guide to action. Learn more about Lean and the IHI approach in the new paper.
Placebos can have real healing effects. Not everyone wants to be called a cancer survivor. Breastfeeding improves the health of moms, not just their babies. These are just a few of the ideas discussed last week in Washington, DC, and San Francisco as part of the three-day conference “TEDMED 2014: Unlocking Imagination.” Fortunately for those of us who missed it, Karen Eng of the TED blog has written up “11 Fresh Ideas from the TEDMED Stage” for us to learn about these innovations. Check them out and watch some of the talks here.
Mark your calendar for the next Global Chapter Call on October 30 at 12 PM ET. On the call, we’ll highlight the work of Chapters around the world, welcome new Chapters to the IHI Open School community, and answer your questions. All Chapter Leaders, members, and Faculty Advisors are invited to dial in and participate. Keep an eye on this newsletter for call-in information, and we hope you’ll join us!
Don’t forget: We still have funds available to support Chapters with their events. Apply for funding for your events during the fall semester by October 1. Click here to learn more and fill out an application.
Join students across the US in watching Remote Area Medical, an award-winning, feature-length film about a non-profit organization that sets up free health care clinics in underserved areas around the world. The focus of the film is a three-day clinic held on the NASCAR speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. To raise awareness of the need for medical care in poor communities, the American Medical Student Association will sponsor students to host screenings for their Chapters or groups during the last two weeks of October. Check out the trailer, and contact Stephanie Bleyer at steph@sixfootchipmunk.com for support in hosting a screening.
